What to Expect in the Study

This study walks through the seven signs in the Gospel of John, helping participants understand both the historical context and the spiritual significance of each miracle.

Each session takes about 45 minutes, making it ideal for both small group Bible study and personal reflection.

CONTEXT NOTES — Each lesson contains Context Notes. I recommend reading them after the focus questions and before reading the passage. They will provide helpful historical and cultural background.

FOCUS — Each lesson begins with a set of introductory reflection questions designed to help participants engage the passage before studying it in depth.

These questions serve as natural entry points into the text and are often used as icebreakers for group discussion. I typically encourage participants to answer at least one question, though this section can be shortened or skipped if time is limited.

STUDY — In the study section, participants will examine one of the seven miraculous signs recorded in the Gospel of John. They should first read the passage slowly and then answer each question out loud.

Some questions have only one correct answer, while others have multiple possible responses. Keep pressing for good discussion, and always make sure answers are supported by Scripture.

APPLY — Each lesson concludes with an application section designed to help participants move from understanding Scripture to living it out.

I typically allow group members to choose which question they want to answer. After giving them a short time to think through their responses, I ask a few people to share their thoughts, or, if time allows, invite everyone to participate.

This section is designed to encourage honest reflection, spiritual growth, and practical application of God’s Word.

A Note to the Facilitator

Come Prepared — To serve your group well, spend time praying for them and studying the passage and discussion questions closely. Think through how you would answer each question yourself, and anticipate where your group may need extra context to understand the Scripture. The more prepared you are, the more your group will connect with and understand God’s Word.

Lead the Discussion Well — These studies are designed to thrive on discussion, not lecture. Make space for everyone to share rather than rushing to fill the silence with answers. No Homework Required — This study is designed to happen together in your meeting. But if you’d like your group to go deeper, you can assign the passage a week ahead of time and encourage participants to read and reflect on it throughout the week. You could also share a worksheet from my Scripture Study Tools so they have good discovery questions to guide their reading.
