What to Expect in the Study

Each session takes about 45 minutes, making it perfect for group discussion or personal reflection.

FOCUS — Each lesson contains two introductory questions that lead to the study. Generally, I choose only one of these questions to answer, and when I am running behind on time, I skip this section.

STUDY — Most of the study sections begin with a review question. Since a letter is intended to be read all at once, the ideas build on one another. Therefore, it is essential to review the last of Paul's thoughts. For each question, I give context, especially for the more complicated verses (there are more in there than I had anticipated!). Below is a list of resources I used as I prepared each lesson.

APPLY — For the application section, I give my group the option of choosing which of the three application questions they would like to answer. After I give them a moment to collect their thoughts, I ask for a minimum of 4 people to share which question they chose and how they answered it, OR, if there is enough time, I have everyone share.

ACTIVITY — Each lesson includes an optional activity specific to that lesson. These activities can be done before or after the lesson and help make the study more meaningful for each participant.

A Note to the Facilitator

Come Prepared — To serve your group well, spend time praying for them and studying the passage and discussion questions closely. Think through how you would answer each question yourself, and anticipate where your group may need extra context to understand the Scripture. The more prepared you are, the more your group will connect with and understand God’s Word.

Lead the Discussion Well — These studies are designed to thrive on discussion, not lecture. Make space for everyone to share rather than rushing to fill the silence with answers. For practical help encouraging participation and building an open, engaged group, check out my 4 Quick Tips for Leading a Bible Study.

No Homework Required — This study is designed to happen together in your meeting. But if you’d like your group to go deeper, you can assign the passage a week ahead of time and encourage participants to read and reflect on it throughout the week. You could also share a worksheet from my Scripture Study Tools so they have good discovery questions to guide their reading.
