HOPES + AMBITIONS: A PRAYERFUL GUIDE TO REFLECTING AND PLANNING YOUR NEXT SEASON

Starting a new season can feel exciting—and a little overwhelming. Before you rush ahead, take a few intentional minutes to reflect, plan, and set your hopes and ambitions. Scroll to the bottom for two free resources to guide you along the way!
Look Back Before You Look Forward
It’s tempting to jump straight into the future—especially if you’re excited or ready to leave the past behind. But pausing to reflect on your last season can bring clarity, peace, and perspective.
Reflection isn’t about dwelling on mistakes or bragging about successes. It’s about acknowledging your experiences and asking God to show you how He has been present and what lessons He wants you to carry forward.
Even if reflection feels intimidating, trust that God’s hand has been at work. He never leaves or forsakes you. Taking time to look back will strengthen your faith and guide your new hopes and ambitions.
Goal Setting: Big Picture → Small Picture
Yearly Goals
Start with a broad overview of your year. Think of it as your “hopes and ambitions” for different areas of life: personal, family, ministry, homeschool, etc.
- Brainstorm broad goals (e.g., introducing a new homeschool activity, finishing three books you already own).
- Don’t worry about exact deadlines—just create direction and focus.
💡 Tip: If a full year feels overwhelming, plan half a year or a quarter instead.
📄 Resource: Hope + Ambitions worksheets—step-by-step guidance for prayerful preparation.
Monthly Goals
Refer back to your yearly goals and select a few to focus on each month.
- Celebrate progress, adjust as needed, and allow grace for things that don’t get completed.
Weekly Goals
Plan each week with specific tasks, including your monthly goals.
- Assign specific days and times to make progress.
- Keep your plan flexible—life happens, and that’s okay!
Find What Works for You
Planning can be joyful and freeing. My hope in sharing this process is that you live intentionally—carving out time to reflect, pray, and plan. God leads these moments, but He also adjusts them.
I’ve personally used these resources in a small group setting, and it was encouraging to see how reflection and goal-setting sparked meaningful conversation and growth. Whether you’re using them alone or with others, these handouts are designed to guide you in a prayerful, intentional process.
Encouragement: Seek His kingdom first (Matthew 6:33) and listen for His guidance. Use the handouts to help, but ultimately, find a system that fits your life and personality.
