Henna Bible Storytelling: A Creative Way to Share Scripture

Want a fun, creative way to memorize and share Bible stories? What if you could tell a story from Scripture just by looking at the designs on your hand? This henna activity makes Scripture come alive and is perfect for women of all ages to engage with God’s Word in a hands-on, memorable way.
PS: If you love this storytelling method but want to try it without henna, I’ve created a Bible Storytelling Curriculum you can download for free [CLICK HERE].
Where the Idea Came From
Several years ago, a friend of mine, a missionary overseas, introduced me to Bible storytelling through henna designs. In the culture she served, women often adorned their skin with henna for celebrations, festivals, or even everyday beauty. She learned to create designs that symbolically represented Bible stories, and the designs became a natural conversation starter for sharing Scripture with others.
I loved this idea and realized it could work anywhere. Beautiful and noticeable, henna designs are a creative way to memorize and share Bible stories with the people around you. I’ve used this activity with teens, college students, and adult women—and each time it’s been a hit!
How to Do It
1. Plan for Enough Time
Participants will be reading passages, retelling the stories, and applying henna. Plan for 2–4 hours depending on your group size. When I hosted 15 students and adults, it took about three hours to complete.
2. Choose Your Stories and Designs
[CLICK HERE] to select henna designs that correspond to the Bible stories you want participants to memorize. I used Pray for Perseverance and Pray for Mercy. Print the designs alongside the scriptures so everyone has a reference during the activity.
3. Introduce the Activity
- Briefly explain what henna is and how it can be used as a tool for storytelling.
- Read the first scripture aloud and show the corresponding design.
- Retell the story (not word-for-word) while pointing to the images on the design that represent each part of the story.
4. Practice Retelling
- Pair participants to practice retelling the story, using the design as a guide.
- Lead a short discussion so the passage has meaning:
- What does this passage teach us about God or people?
- How can we respond to Him in light of this story?
Note: This isn’t a deep Bible study, but participants should understand why the passage matters and be able to share that with others.
5. Apply the Henna
Once participants are comfortable with the story, they can apply henna to themselves or with help from someone experienced.
Encourage everyone to choose the story/design they connected with most.
Bring Scripture to Life
This activity is more than just art—it’s a way to bring Scripture to life and make it stick in your heart. Each design becomes a conversation starter, a personal reminder of God’s Word, and a creative tool for sharing faith with others. Whether you’re doing this with teens, college students, or adult women, henna storytelling is a joyful, hands-on way to know God and make Him known.
